Effect of Muscle Fatigue on Sensory Thresholds of Masseteric Area and Silent Period of Masseter Muscle

Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the effect of experimentally induced muscle fatigue on pressure pain threshold(PPT). current perception threshold(CPT), and silent period(SP). Eight healthy volunteers(24.9+0.6 yrs old) without past history of present symptoms of orofacial pain were participated. PPTs and CPTs of masseteric area, and SPs of masseter muscle were recorded before and after sustained isometric contraction at 60% level of maximum voluntary contraction of electromyographic activity. SPs were measured under controlled muscle contraction level (0.6mV) and constant current stimulation (15mA). After the sustained isometric contraction, PPTs were significantly decreased (p<0.01), but CPTs and SPs were not significantly different. These results suggest that fatigue of masseter muscle affects locally on the muscle and its neuromuscular junction area, but does not affect nociceptive reflex of masseter muscle and current perception thresholds of masseteric area.
